A TOMMY'S LIFE IN THE TRENCHES

A TOMMY'S LIFE IN THE TRENCHES

A Soldier-Artist on the Western Front

Edited by John Place and William Mackain-Bremner. The life of an ordinary soldier during World War I is captured in this remarkable collection of more than 200 color postcards designed by Private Fergus Mackain, who, after being wounded in battle, began designing these postcards for his fellow soldiers to send to their families back home. Mackain's lighthearted and ironic sketches document incidents ranging from fetching a morning cup of tea, to getting stuck in a shell hole knee-deep in water, to being on sentry duty at night, to the joys of the rum ration. The illustrations and accompanying commentary, along with reproductions of actual messages written by soldiers during the war, provide a touching and up-close account of Mackain's own wartime experiences and those of other soldiers. Grades 7 and up. Index. Appendixes. Bibliography. 9½" x 6½". Amberley. 127 pages. 2017 edition.
