How did the Plymouth settlement survive—against all odds?
SAINTS & STRANGERS
The Mayflower Is Coming
The Pilgrims' harrowing voyage to America aboard the Mayflower and the founding of Plymouth colony are dramatically reenacted in this 2015 two-part National Geographic miniseries grounded in the real story of what happened when cultures collided in 1620. The episodes depict the details of the conflict between the religious Pilgrims (the "Saints" of the title) and their profit-oriented fellow travelers, their difficulties surviving in the harsh New England climate, their struggles with the local tribes, and the celebration of the first Thanksgiving. It is a nuanced story of hunger and disease, loyalties and shifting alliances, faith, and greed told through the experiences of key figures such as William Bradford, Miles Standish, Squanto, Massasoit, and others. The sets and costumes add to the production's realism, as does the authentic (subtitled) language spoken by the Native American characters. Grades 8 and up. English SDH and French subtitles. Color. 192 minutes.
